Border Collies Pictures - Description

Border Collies are referred to as herding dogs and are used in a variety of activities. This breed is considered the smartest one and is valued greatly for its intelligence, task solving abilities, and readiness to always please its owner. The Border Collie makes a wonderful hunting companion, tracking and herding dog, and obedience and agility competitor. Besides, it is a friendly companion for people of all ages.

Border Collies Pictures - Physical Characteristics

Border Collies are medium-sized dogs. According to the AKC standard, approved in 1995, the Border Collie stands about 18-22 inches at the shoulder. Males and females differ both in height and weight. As a rule, a male weighs about 30-45 pounds. Females are slightly smaller. However, individual dogs can weigh more.

Since the Border Collie is a working dog, all its physical characteristics should stress great endurance and a considerable extent of agility. Besides, the breed should be rather adaptable and easy to care for. Indeed, Border Collies are known for their inexhaustible energy source and unpretentiousness in terms of maintenance.

Its muscular body, a moderately long muzzle, a wide rib cage, and a low-set tail allow for swift movements and balance. The Border Collie is capable of changing directions quickly. Its water-resistant coat with a dense under coat provides for effective protection from cold. The coat can be longer on the chest, belly, and forelegs.

Border Collies vary in color greatly. One of the most common color patterns is that of primary black with areas of white on the chest, legs, and the tail tip. Other colors are also allowed in the Border Collie with the exception of totally white dogs.

Border Collies Pictures - Personality Traits

The Border Collie is said to do well with family members and children of older age. Strangers should be aware of the breed's natural protectiveness, which makes the Collie sometimes snappish. Inborn protectiveness also makes the Border Collie a good watchdog.

The Border Collie is not always compatible with other pets, especially with same-sex ones. The breed tends to display dominance over cattle, other canines, and even children. The situation can go out of hand if a Border Collie is not involved in herding activities. When bored, the dog is likely to become destructive.

Border Collies Pictures - Maintenance

The Border Collie does not need a lot of grooming. Brushing about twice a week will suffice to keep its coat clean and healthy. The breed sheds a little. It is also susceptible to flea bites and can develop allergies.

Generally healthy, the Border Collie, however, can suffer from bone and eye problems. It is recommended to test breeding stock for hip and eye conditions. Also, meeting all its exercise needs is a must. The Border Collie is highly energetic and needs no less than a few 40-minute walks every day. Apartment living will hardly be to a Border Collie's liking, since it cannot do without much space to run about. A yard is best suited for Border Collies.
